Children’s Safety Seats

  • Carefully read the owner’s manuals for your vehicle and car seat before traveling with children and read Car Safety Seats: A Guide for Families by the American Academy of Pediatrics.
  • Check to be sure that your child’s seat hasn’t been recalled at Child Safety Seat Recalls, a website maintained by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Roadside Assistance

  • Have your cell phone with you on the road or purchase a prepaid phone to keep in the car for emergencies. Your cell phone may even offer a towing plan.
  • Many car insurance companies offer emergency roadside assistance services, but you may want to check and see if and how your rates will go up if you use it. In addition, many car dealerships and even credit card companies offer emergency roadside assistance plans.

Car Clubs

  • Members of car cubs such as AAA or Better World Club usually receive benefits that include towing, locksmith, battery, fuel delivery services, and other travel perks.

CarFit

  • “CarFit is an educational program developed by AARP and the American Occupational Therapy Association that offers older adults the opportunity to check how well their personal vehicles ‘fit’ them.” (Carfit)
  • Visit the Carfit website to sign up for an event near you, participate in a live CarFit Virtual workshop on Zoom, or watch the CarFit On-demand workshop available online.
